Appliances is one of the test laboratories within the Electrotechnical Department of LSD (Laboratory Services Division). It is primarily responsible for conducting electrical safety, performance and energy efficiency tests on various types of household appliances, including electricity meters and hot water storage heaters (Geysers). This is a laboratory that is ISO 17025 accredited by SANAS (South African National Accreditation Systems), and this accreditation is traceable to ILAC (International Laboratory Accreditation Corporation).
Test services and Issuance of Test Reports
After the products have been tested to SANS (South African National Standards) and SANS test methods, and also to any other customer’s specific requirement, a test report is issued out. The test reports are issued following the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) test report format. This is an internationally recognized test reporting format used by other laboratories globally that are within the IEC CB (Certification Body) scheme. Customer specific test reports may either be issued in the same format or to any format preferred by the customer.
Sectors of stakeholders serviced by Appliances Laboratory
Appliances provides test services to SABS Mark holders in the various test products such as electricity meters, hot water storage heaters, heating elements and thermostats, to list a few. Testing is also provided to local and overseas manufacturers of these products for the purpose of complying to the national regulations and for developmental testing. Test services is also provided to support regulators in their drive for product compliance in the South African Market. Products are tested and reports issued to the regulators to enable them to make objective decisions about the products whether they are fit to be in the market and for consumer use.
