The Electromagnetic Compatibility and Interference (EMC/I) is a unit within the SABS that provides services for conformity to national and international EMC standards.
It offers end-to-end EMC conformity assessment services from testing, certification and standards development support. The unit currently consist of two functions: issuance of EMC Certificates of Conformance and SABS Authorized test laboratory program (SABS A-Lab)
Issuance of Certificates of Conformance (CoCs)
The SABS was appointed by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) to issue EMC CoCs for non-telecommunications products. The CoCs are issued under the provisions states in section 35 of the Electronic Communications Act No. 36 of 2005 (as amended) and the ICASA Revised Official List of Regulated Standards for Technical Equipment and Electronic Communications Equipment Regulations (“List of Regulated Standards”) as published in Government Gazette No. 39182 on 9 September 2015. The SABS issues CoCs through thorough assessment of EMC test reports from only SABS authorised test laboratories.
To support the CoCs issuance functions, the SABS developed and manages a testing laboratory authorisation program (A-Lab) to ensure high confidence level in test results and traceability of test report. Under the A-Lab program, accredited and independent test laboratories are assessed by the SABS before they are listed as SABS authorized labs. Authorized labs are managed through international best practice and local market requirements.
