The SABS SCM subscribes to Section 217 of the South African constitution which stipulates that all public sector procurement shall be fair, transparent, competitive, equitable and cost effective.

As per Section 38 (1)(iii) of the Public Finance Management Act, SABS procure goods, services and/or work fairly and ensure best value for money whilst limiting opportunities for malpractice and other forms of intentional wrongdoing. It is the policy of the SABS to procure technically and operationally suitable quality products and services at optimum total cost of ownership (TCO) without compromising competitive cost.

Preference will be given to products bearing the SABS mark, on grounds that conformity with the technical requirement is assured. Preference, but to a lesser extent, will be given to suppliers certified to SANS 9001/ISO 9001 by SANAS accredited (or SANAS recognised) certification bodies on grounds that their processes are adequately controlled.
