The South African Bureau of Standards develops and maintains South African National Standards through National Technical Committees. The South African Bureau of Standards develops and maintains South African National Standards through National Technical Committees.
These technical committees are a representative sample of the industry in which the standardization activities are carried out. It is therefore crucial for the public to be involved in the activities of the Standards development, to ensure that the final output represents the views of the entire South African community. As a signatory to the WTO/TBT agreement, South Africa follows the provisions of Annex 3 of the said agreement, whereby a comment period of 60 days for public enquiry is required.

Become a SDO (Standard Development Organisation)

In accordance with SANS 3:2020, the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) offers the opportunity for organizations to be recognized as Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) if they meet the specified criteria for developing South African National Standards (SANS). 


To apply to become an SDO, organizations must meet the requirements outlined in SANS 3:2020, which includes: 

Legal status as a juristic person in South Africa.  
Demonstrated sector representation and expertise in standards development. 
Open participation for all relevant stakeholders in the sector. 
Adequate financial and human resources to support ongoing standard-setting activities. 


Recognition as an SDO is valid for five years, with the possibility of renewal based on continued compliance with the criteria.
