The Standards Division, in accordance with the Standards Act No 8 of 2008, is mandated to develop, promote and maintain South African National Standards (SANS) in accordance with the SABS National Norm:2021, National Norm for the development of South African National Standards.

Put simply, a standard is an agreed, repeatable way of doing something. It is a published document that contains a technical specification, or other precise criteria, designed to be used consistently as a rule, guideline or definition.

Standards help to make life simpler and increase the reliability and effectiveness of many of the goods and services we use. Standards are created by bringing together the experience and expertise of all interested parties, such as the producers, sellers, buyers, users and regulators of a particular material, product, process or service.

We have over 70 years of experience in developing national standards that enhance South Africa’s competitiveness and serve as the foundation for consumer protection, health, safety, and environmental well-being.

Central to this process are nearly 300 technical committees and subcommittees, administered by the Standards Division of SABS, which are responsible for producing these standards. To date, we have published approximately 7,500 standards, and we continue to maintain existing standards while developing new ones.

National standards play a crucial role in catalyzing economic activity by providing the technical tools that enable local industries to access domestic, regional, and global markets. Collaboration at the national, regional, and international levels, involving a diverse range of stakeholders, ensures the development of cutting-edge technical solutions.

The key objectives of the National Standards Body include developing and maintaining relevant standards that address market needs, support socio-economic and environmental goals, and drive innovation and competitiveness in industries.
