South African National Standards (SANS) published in June 2020
The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) is the National Standards Body of South Africa that is responsible for the development, maintenance and promotion of South African National Standards (SANS) as mandated by the Standards Act No.8 of 2008. SABS is also responsible for the promotion of quality in connection with commodities, products and services; and render conformity assessment services and assist in matters connected therewith.
“National standards are the backbone of every economy and it is critical that these standards are systematically reviewed to ensure that it contains relevant knowledge and information that addresses national policy and priorities. It is important that industries, consumers, policy makers and regulators are aware of updates to national standards including the uptake and implementation of national standards as a tool towards industrialisation, ensuring fit for purpose products and services and supporting regulatory objectives. ” says Sadhvir Bissoon, Standards Executive at SABS.
SANS do not exist in isolation and the need for conformity assessment which is testing, certification and inspection of products is equally important for quality assurance purposes. Standards are developed in technical committees through a diverse representation of experts and are subjected to a public enquiry process.
Stakeholders interested in becoming members of SABS technical committees can register their interest to participate on www.sabs.co.za or email info@sabs.co.za
SABS currently has a collection of 7 400 SANS and continues to develop more standards. SANS are available for purchase via the SABS webstore.
